Design in Comedy

I have seen this bottle before...but don't know if this bottle is out yet. I don't get my medication at Target. I knew that it was designed by NYC firm, Sonic, but was unaware that it was in conjunction with others. An article on the bottle found here.

Anyway, comedian George Carlin released his "Rules for 2006." In it, one "rule" is directed towards the bottle...which was kind of humourous:

New Rule: "Stop f***ing with old people. Target is introducing a
redesigned pill bottle that's square, with a bigger label. And the top is
now the bottom. And by the time grandpa figures out how to open it, his
ass will be in the morgue. Congratulations, Target, you just solved the
Social Security crisis."

Cool Site!

Wow...came across this site...and its awesome!!! Definitely worth a look. An Illustrated bible done by Lego's!!!

The Brick Testament

Also...while researching some ID (industrial design) related sites...my co-worker showed me this site...which is totally crazy! An online service to make you fake ID's. I'm a photoshop pro...why didn't I think of this!!! haha. Kind of gutsy to have a service like that up on the web...am I missing something?

Mission 1: Complete

After years and years of promising myself a new ride...I finally did it! The Ivory Pearl G35 has been ordered! Unfortunately I won't be taking delivery till late May. Buuuut, that will allow some of the dirty NJ roads to clear up for some summa' summa'-time cruising. Can't wait!!! Who wants a ride?

That does not belong there...

So I've been trying to document my daily random occurrances...but haven't been doing too good a job. Thanks to my new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX9 I'm able to snap off some awesome, quick shots to let you see what I see.

Can't say it will always be suuuuuuuuuuuuper exciting...but I'll do my best to keep you entertained. Today I was about to pull in the bank...and noticed an odd bumper sticker on a basic Ford Ranger in front of me. It read: "Yes, its fast...No, you can't drive it."

Dude...its a pick-up truck!!! haha. Perhaps he had a blown V8 in there...but as he pulled away was the muffled sound of a stock V6...how disappointing. Now, I'm not a fan of ANY bumper stickers on cars...but come on! At least make it appropriate!

Thank You!

Just wanted to say thanks to all who made this a great b-day! 26 is only a number! hehe

The cards, presents, compliments, brownies, carrot cake jpegs :), two bottles of Chiraz, and lunch at the Limestone.

So I had all intentions of treating myself to the biggest b-day present of all. Buuuut, Ray was not working today. So tomorrow will be the day...THE DAY! Know what I'm talking about?????

Well its about time!

Finally...a project at work to be totally excited about!!! I am sharpening my pencils as we speak to bust out some awesome sketches. It will be quick, and intense...but I will team with Dave to hopefully produce some good stuff. Think FOOD!

Came across a good quote the other day by Mark Twain...words to live by:

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade wings in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

No new "designer" work to post up...but while sorting through my hd, I came across a comp that always inspired me. Definately not for everyone...and all I know is it was done by some guy Steve, haha. For MTV2's amp line a few years back...Enjoy:

Looks

So perhaps I'm really diggin' deep here...but while looking at some new Sony PS3 console images...I noticed a slight similarity. Not sure if anyone remembers the NEC TurboGrafx 16 system in the early 90's? (The PC Engine in Japan). Well, after a few years in production...NEC combined their game system with their cd-rom to form the "TurboDuo"...as it was known here in the states.

Maybe the the PS3 isn't a dead ringer...but just the general form and placement of a few key elements made me look closer. For instance...the lofted surface on top. The separation in half...The slit for the CD. Ok, so maybe thats it, haha. Just found it to be a slightly interesting throwback to the days of 16-bit!

Woohoo! In Production

A quick project this summer with HSD was designing a new Biometric Lock for Axxis Biometrics. They already had some "harder-edged" commercial locks in their portfolio...but wanted something a bit more "classical"...yet still having a contemporary look. The result is what you see below. What a quick turnaround! If anyone wants to get me a b-day present...which is Jan 26th btw!...can spend a cool $600 and surprise me! haha :)

Hope there is a better glamour shot to come:

Oops...

Well, had to export some .dxf files to Illustrator today...and sure enough the lineweight was all screwy. I never had this problem in the past...but now it happens all the time. Not only that but an ordinary oval object turned into some funky contraption! Where those squiggles came from I have no idea! Anyway...never fear! I decided to run with it. Change the lineweight to white, ad a background color...all done :)

Its nice when your computer errors create graphic expression for you! haha

Cool!!!

Some pretty wild new phones from NEC. And yes...we will NOT be receiving them here in the USA! booo hooo:

My favorite in red:

I really wonder why we never receive cool and "different" stuff like this here. You cannot tell me that after all of marketing's research and polls, that everyone prefers painted silver blocks as phones. Thats ALL we have here. I applaud some key instances like the Motorola RAZR...but more for the innovative keypad. Almost everything else in the Motorola line is a silver brick. What are the designers thinking. Are there really designs like the NEC above being produced in corporate USA studios...but never see the light of day?

Speaking of which...my friend got a new LG phone the other day. It is HORRENDOUS! It has a ton of features...but does the aesthetic appeal have to be compromised for that? It is a whale of a phone.

If you want to see more of the NEC stuff above...go here

Short entry...Theme of white...

So lately...well, for the past few years...I've found myself being more and more attracted to "white" products. Cars (as you can see below), bike components, consumer products, accessories, etc. Not sure what it is...the innocence, the mystique, the cleanliness? There is just something about the purity of hue that intrigues me.

With that being said I think I'll treat myself to a new helmet. White of course :)
Time to put aside my '03 Bell Ghisallo and upgrade to the '06 SweepR. Onsale at Supergo!

Should I...

Keep rockin' the beard? My design director isn't exactly liking it. Guess I'm taking too much after my "hunter" co-worker, haha. Are beards in or out?

I can't even imagine how long it would take me to do this! LOL

A few things - Friday

Pillar Box Red is the official wine of HSD. After Studer-san bought 3 cases of it...its tempting to pop open a bottle at the end of every work day. Luckily today was one of those days. I'll have to buy some at the local store before its all gone. Who wants some?

Anyone remember the HBO series Mind of the Married Man?
Yesterday I receive the Virginia Tech Alumni newsletter and find an article about the show. If anyone recalls, the term "Happy Ending" (during a massage) was brought about in the show...which is now a common term among Americans. Well, at least common with my friends, haha. Turns out the asian massage woman is Michelle Krusiec a fellow VT grad!

2006...New year...new options

So I want to welcome 2006 as a year of new opportunity, discovery, and self fulfillment. Each year I make resolutions...and by the time the year ends, I can't remember what I signed up for, hehe. Usually it always has something to do with cycling x-many miles, etc. This year I really want to concentrate on happiness. I do not exactly know what that will entail...or how I will find it...but I am going to take some risks and see where it gets me.

1) Career. Sometimes design is great...sometimes it sucks. You have to ride the wave. 2005 was good. Got some cool concepts out there...recognized on design sites and blogs. I was progressing in my skills and project management...but was sometimes blinded by my own "maximism." Now at least I know where I am at...know what I'm capable of...and am certainly worthy of any new opportunity. Will the right one come along? Maybe. But I will be actively searching.

2) Living. This might go hand in hand with career...maybe not. Is there a specific plan for '06...not really. Always have my eyes open for the right housing. Checked out some really nice condo's today in The Hills...even with a garage for the Turbo2! Tennis courts and pools all over...niiiiiiiiiice.

3) Toys. Should I give up my boy-racer days? And opt for the smooth looks and performance of the G? Test drove one on Tuesday...loved it and plan to order my white one soon:

We shall see what 2006 brings. I really don't want to make all the little resolutions...because quite frankly I'm content with my idiosyncrasies. Only little resolution is to be more constant in updating the blog!

Cheers!
